PPCEducate – what is it?

The digital platform supporting education in paediatric palliative care across the South of England. New learning (such as independent or blended learning modules) can be created and hosted through the platform, as well as signposting to existing resources. In addition, locally delivered study days can utilise the platform for virtual classroom, agendas/resources, feedback, attendance and booking systems.

The platform is APPM (Association of Paediatric Palliative Medicine) endorsed, and free to learners in the South of England (current funding is jointly held from Southeast and Southwest).

Contributors to learning development are self-identified members of the South of England Paediatric Palliative Care (PPC) Education Network, in the form of working groups around particular areas of interest.

The PPCEducate board is ultimately responsible for governance, with the curriculum sub-group of the Education Network ensuring new and existing content is relevant and up-to-date.

Learn by theme:

Learning and resources on this platform are all related to paediatric palliative care, and would all cover one or more of the four overarching themes:

  • Communication, and the child/parent voice
  • Team around the child
  • PPC knowledge and skills
  • Self-care and personal development

Learn by curriculum/competency framework:

General or specific sets of competencies can be uploaded with course areas or individual activities linked to specific competencies. This can be personalised to the learner via lesson plans.

Bespoke sets of competencies (for example for one organisation) can also be added.

Learn by selection:

Learners can use the resource bank or global search to meet a specific learning need.

Learn by role:

Within a course/learning topic, it is possible to tailor learning objectives or activities to specific groups of professionals based on their job role or level that they are working at.

Education by area:

As an educator, you can develop something for a specific role, organisation or geographical area. But always question – can this have a wider remit/impact by lifting it to regional level. Don’t re-invent the wheel / work in silos!

Education by topic:

As educators, you will often hold a personal ‘bank’ of teaching materials and resources that you use. With the ‘grab & go worksheets’, you can pick up something and use it for small group teaching on the fly, or contribute your own for sharing with others.

Time-efficiency and equity in education development:

By active participation in a working group, one hour of your time once a month that would have been spent developing a resource for your own organisation/department could add to everyone else’s hours, to create something with wider application, reach more learners in an equitable and engaging way, and have measurable impact.
